Tiny Moments
I used the natural process of melting ice to create this work. Tiny lights and contact microphones were frozen inside a ball of ice and then hung from the ceiling of the gallery. Directly beneath was a small dish with a contact microphone attached to the underside. As the ice melted droplets of water would land in the dish. Each droplet would trigger the light inside the ice to come on for a random amount of time. These droplets were also amplified and would resonate throughout the space. The heat from the light would directly influence the melting process and the random length of time of light would create ever changing rhythms of light and sound.
I used four sets of ice/mic/light at the same time spread out across the darkened space. The introduction of the public into the space directly influenced the amount of heat in the room (especially during busy periods) and, therefore, altered the process once more.
